Reiki is a healing technique that originated in Japan with Dr. Usui in the late 1800s. The word Reiki is made up two Japanese words. Rei, which means higher power and Ki, which means life force energy. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of facilitating and enhancing the natural healing abilities of the body.
An analogy of learning Reiki would be, that everyone has a house that has been wired for electricity, yet the central switch in the fuse box has not been activated. With the Reiki attunement, (which has been passed on from Reiki master to Reiki master from Dr. Usiu) the central switch is turned on so that this life force energy can pass through the Reiki healer to the recipient. This is generally done by laying on hands, although Reiki can also be sent over a distance. Giving and receiving Reiki is not dependent on intellectual or spiritual development. Anyone, after having received a Reiki attunement, can give this life force energy to another benefiting both the giver and the receiver.
In traditional Reiki there are three levels of development. Reiki level I, level II and Reiki master.
